Single Moms - Take Care of Yourself

How can single moms do everything? They are only one person trying to do the job of two, and guess where they drop the ball? With anything that pertains to themselves, whether it's pursuing their dreams, finding their passion, or taking care of themselves. They don't realize when you're parenting alone, you still need to take time for yourself. At the end of the day, single moms are exhausted and worn out, the last thing they are doing is thinking about what they need. The only thing that run through their minds is how quickly can they get into bed and go to sleep... just to do it all over again tomorrow.

Self care is a necessity. It's time to recognize it's not longer a luxury. When you're doing 50 million things a day, you have to take care of yourself. You may have been taught it's selfish, but that's just not true, because you are not effectively or efficiently doing anything if you're putting you on the back burner. This is the exact reason why on airplanes, they say to put your mask on first and then put them on other people. You have to take care of yourself first.

What does taking care of yourself mean? Whether you read a good book, have a cup of hot tea, meditate, or give yourself a pedicure, you need your time. You need peace and quiet. Wait, what did you just say?

Yes, you need your peace and quiet. I know when you're parenting alone, that may seem impossible to come by, but I know you can do it. If your kids are awake when you have this time, instill in them the importance of your peace and quiet time. This means no interruptions or distractions unless something is an emergency (and explain what you mean by an emergency, because kids can think everything is one). Once you start letting them interrupt, they will know they can. Then they will never take your peace and quiet time seriously.

Like you, your kids want to know what's in it for them. So what does having this time mean to you? You'll be less cranky, moody, or frustrated. You'll become more relaxed, patient, and easy going. What does this look like to them? You'll be able to talk in a calm voice, no more yelling, you'll enjoy life more, and you'll laugh again, because you won't be so stressed all the time.

Or you can make it easier on yourself, and do it when your kids are asleep. This way you know you'll have quiet time... as long as you don't forgo it and fall asleep yourself. You can easily implement a routine that you do every night and stick to it. You will love yourself for it!

Being a single mom can run you ragged if you let it. Don't allow parenting alone to have this affect on you. Make sure you're taking time for yourself. It will not only help you, it will greatly change the way you treat others, talk to your kids, and your disposition. You'll experience a shift in your attitude and perspective, and then you'll make sure you always have time for self care. It's a necessity.
