Circumstances Trigger Happiness

What good is your happiness? For that matter, what good is your sadness? When I was a schoolboy, I thought that happiness is something that can only happen to people with effort. It meant that for one to be happy, he or she would have to toil or associate him or herself with external rewards. Gradually, however, I started to realize that happiness is an inborn gift. It is the birth certificate that never grows old. We were all born certified and sealed with timeless happiness. Circumstances, such as time, place, or people have no impact to avert our happiness. Sometimes it may seem that circumstances are the masters over the mind. They can suffocate and cloud the mind, but circumstances alone cannot pollute the original stuff.

One can consider circumstances as clouds in the vast sky. Sometimes heavy, black clouds cover up the sky. The sky itself remains untouched and uncontaminated. The same is true with happiness. Despite your circumstances, your happiness remains undisturbed. It is deep-rooted. I once heard that circumstances are nothing but alarms to remind oneself of the original stuff. In fact we become more cautious and vigilant when circumstances challenge us. In other words, the more hardships there are, the more experience one gets, from which one learns to stay in tune with the inner treasure. Hence, the only option is to take circumstances as learning opportunities to rise higher and higher. Failing to recognize their essence may lead one to surrender in self-pity and self-destruction.

In this world, there are a number of people who take challenges as a curse from God. Every one of us, be they a child or an adult, has many obstacles and personal problems. It does not matter what kind of problem it is. It might be health problems, financial bankruptcy, relationship issues or the failure of plans to realize. These are nothing, however, but a wake-up call to become the best that one can be.

No one can learn the mystery of happiness on a bed. The cost should be paid. One has to try new things in order to gain experience and understand what lies within. The "comfort zone" is a silent killer, for it rusts the mind and prevents betterment in one's life. This simply tells us that circumstances are learning opportunities to open up the inner world

One has to be grateful for challenges and obstacles. Look at the lotus flower! It is so beautiful, shining and magnificent. It passes through mud, rocks, and weeds, overcoming many barriers to rise above the surface. The same is true with you. Like the lotus flower, challenges and barriers will make you sharper and more intelligent. It can then be concluded that circumstances are the causes to wake up the sleepy giant from within. No one was born all-knowing and well-instructed about happiness. However, every one of us was born with the raw materials of happiness. The manual for using those materials lies within oneself. Just a little turn towards the storehouse can bring tremendous understanding. With this understanding, one can access happiness anytime or anywhere.
